Environmental Sponge Sampling 101

Sponge Sampling Systems are an effective and easy way to collect surface samples as part of a microbiological environmental monitoring program. But proper handling of sampling sponges is necessary to ensure accurate results. Never worked with sampling sponges before? Or need a refresher on best practices? Take a look below for ResInnova Laboratories’ guide to environmental sponge sampling

Select the area to be sampled. Typically, this is a 10 cm x 10 cm area, though this may vary depending on the surface type and location. Areas can include furniture, countertops, floor areas, sinks, and other high-touch, commonly contaminated surfaces. Use a single sponge sample for each selected area.

Label the sponge bag with the selected location ID using. A felt-tip marker is recommended to avoid ripping the bag. Document the sample identifications on the provided sampling form.

Open the bag by ripping the top of the sponge bag where indicated and pulling the front and back tabs apart to hold it open. Without placing your hand into the bag, guide the stick handle up through the top of the bag so it can easily be reached. Touch only the handle and keep the bag nearby during the sampling process.

To collect your sample, wipe one side of the sponge vertically across the sampling area with gentle pressure, ensuring the entire area has been sampled. Flip the sponge to the other side and repeat the process using a horizontal recovery.

Release the sponge into the bag aseptically using the quick-release grips on the sides of the handle. Discard the used handle and close the bag by rolling the opening down 4 times and sealing with the tabbed side ties. Disinfect the sampled area to clean off residual liquid from the sampling sponge.

Place all sponge samples into a zippered plastic bag and then into an insulated container (such as a foam box or reusable cooler)with enough ice packs to keep the contents below 4 °C for 24 hours. Ship overnight to ResInnova Laboratories. Samples can be received Monday-Friday (excluding federal holidays) Include the sample collection form in your shipment and/or email a copy to our team.
